Poker is a card game where the highest-value hand wins the pot. A hand is made up of two cards from your own pocket as well as five community cards. Whenever you are in the position to call a bet, always take the time to think about your decision before acting. Especially when you are new to the game, it is easy to make bad decisions and lose a lot of money.
Before the cards are dealt, everyone must put up some money in a pot called the ante. This is usually a small amount, but can be much higher depending on the stakes and the rules of the game. Once the antes have been placed, the dealer deals each player two cards. The player to the left of the button must then place a bet, and the person to his or her right must raise it. Often the bettor will bet in increments of $5, $10 or $25.
Once the preflop betting round is over, the dealer will place three more cards face up on the table. These are known as the community cards and anyone can use them to form a poker hand. After this is done the betting continues again.
The final betting round, known as the River, reveals the fifth community card. This is the last chance for players to improve their poker hand before the showdown. During this final betting round, the highest poker hand wins the pot. If no one has a winning hand, the dealer wins the pot. If there is a tie between players, the pot is split. If a player has no hand, they must fold before the showdown and leave the table.
